MDI native, Joanna, has always been drawn to the ocean. Growing up on the rocky coast of Maine, Jo was often found wading in tide pools and exploring the natural world. She has spent most of her life working on the water--as a lobsterwoman, a sailor, and a chef on private yachts. Her adventures at sea have taken her across the Atlantic, throughout the Mediterranean, and all over the West Indies. Despite her extensive travels, Jo has always considered MDI home. Jo graduated from College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor with a B.A. in human ecology. She is now dedicated to making her livelihood where she grew up and is now raising a family with her husband Jesse.
"Oysters became a natural next step for us. We needed a way to maintain our tradition of working at sea and we wanted to start a family. A sense of home is important to both of us and we care deeply about the well being of our waters. Oysters are known to be environmentally beneficial. If I can get up and work on the water everyday and provide a sustainable, delicious and eco-friendly product, and also raise my daughter-- my dreams are coming true."
Jesse Fogg, Co-founder of Bar Harbor Oyster Co. is a Bar Harbor native. Jesse grew up lobster fishing on Mount Desert Island at a very young age with his father. After graduating from high school he attended Maine Maritime Academy where he received a bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering as well as a U.S. Coast Guard Chief Engineer License. After completing Maine Maritime Jesse stuck to his roots and returned to the fishing industry where he worked as chief engineer. Traveling the globe working for various fishing companies in Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Mauritania and currently in Alaska. In his spare time he enjoys nothing more than messing about with boats.
